FutureSteelVehicle (FSV) showcases the new advanced powertrain technologies that are now under development for the year 2020 and beyond. FSV took a holistic approach on concept development of innovative vehicle layout and optimized vehicle architecture. The designs offer advanced high-strength, steel intensive solutions to answer the call of reduced weight vehicles, resulting in a lighter, more fuel and cost efficient vehicle that will reduce the carbon footprint associated with the growing automotive market.

"According to a recent study, a 10% growth rate per year in the use of advance high-strength steel through 2020 is predicted as automakers strive to meet the 35.5 miles per gallon fuel economy standard by 2016."

"Lawrence Kavanagh, president of the Steel Market Development Institute, says when the total vehicle lifecycle is considered, steel is the most environmentally effective choice for auto makers because in addition to the relative light weight of high-strength alloys, steel is 100% recyclable at the end of its life and less greenhouse gases are created during its manufacture than competing materials."

Technical Deliverables
Future Steel Vehicle - Phase II Project Results (5MB)
Phase II results reveal seven advanced high-strength steel optimized structural sub-systems that are lighter than comparable structures and pave the way to achieving the 35 percent full body mass reduction target. Phase II results show advanced high-strength steel's superior results in cost, weight and greenhouse gas emissions when compared to baseline or aluminum sub-systems.
