A Comparative Life Cycle Assessment of Cast Aluminum, Cast Iron, and Forged Steel Steering Knuckles
This paper will discuss the Life-Cycle Inventory/Life-Cycle Assessment (LCI/LCA) of three automotive steering knuckles with different manufacturing processes and materials. The three different fabrications for the steering knuckles that will be reviewed and compared against their greenhouse gas emissions are cast aluminum, cast iron, and forged steel.
Fatigue Performance Evaluation of Forged Steel vs. Ductile Cast Iron Crankshaft - Executive Summary
The University of Toledo Executive Summary outlines its test results of the fatigue performance of forged steel vs. ductile cast iron crankshafts.
Fatigue Performance Comparison and Life Predictions of Forged Steel and Ductile Cast Iron Crankshafts (5MB)
This study evaluated and compared the fatigue performance of two competing manufacturing technologies for automotive crankshafts.
Stress Analysis and Optimization of Crankshafts Subject to Dynamic Loading (6.5 MB)
This study investigated weight and cost reduction opportunities for a forged steel crankshaft.
The World's Top 10 Best Engines for 2007
An overview of Ward’s AutoWorld Magazines’ winners for the 10 Best Engines for 2007. The overview focuses on steel usage in these particular engines with the emphasis on steel bar and rod and notes the change from specific materials previously used on the type of engine with comments regarding any far reaching effects it might have on the bar and rod industry.
Bar Steel Machinability
The AISI Bar Machinability Sub-committee was formed in 1991 to develop a database of automotive bar steel machinability under single point carbide turning conditions.
Dynamic Load Analysis and Optimization of Connecting Rods
An AISI sponsored study confirming the benefits of using C-70 steel that can reduce the cost for making forged connecting rods by 25 percent, and can reduce mass about 10 percent, while enhancing performance and durability.
Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement
A report that highlights the life cycle cost analysis and benefit-cost analysis of four different approaches to highway construction.
A Comparative Study of Fatigue Behavior and Life Predictions of Forged Steel and PM Connecting Rods
A study investigating and comparing fatigue behavior of forged steel and powder metal connecting rods that included strain-controlled specimen testing, with specimens obtained from the connecting rods, as well as load-controlled connecting rod bench testing.
Bar Steel Fatigue Database
The Bar and Rod Market Development Group (BRMDG) of AISI has recently expanded its online Bar Steel Fatigue Database with 21 new grade/process iterations, making fatigue data available on a total of 42 steel grade/process combinations. This database provides engineers with accurate and detailed component fatigue life predictions that allow them to optimize critical powertrain and chassis component designs. The database contains steel bar mechanical property and fatigue information for optimizing component part design, reducing component design cycle time and selecting the best steel grade and process for the part, in less time and at reduced costs.
