AISI Completes Formability Study on Advanced High-Strength Steels

Detroit, MI, January 31, 2004 -Results of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) / Department of Energy (DOE) collaborative effort to characterize the formability of several important high-strength steels are now contained in a 174-page report. Automotive engineers will find the results of the formability study useful in understanding material behavior under press forming conditions, especially the advanced high-strength steels (AHSS). Data may also be used in conducting finite element (FE) simulations. Because AHSS represents near-reach technology, the United States Department of Energy contributed to the project.

The AHSS grades, relatively new materials to the North American automotive market, offer good opportunities for increasing mass reduction and fuel efficiency, and for improving safety and structural performance, all without adding to the overall vehicle cost.

The steels included in this study were grades of drawing quality and deep drawing quality steels, conventional high-strength steels such as bake-hardenable and HSLA steels, advanced high-strength steels such as Dual-Phase and TRIP steels, and ultra-high-strength Recovery Annealed and tempered martensitic sheet steels. A total of 40 different lots of steel were characterized in this project and the tests were classified into three broad categories:

  • intrinsic mechanical behavior tests,
  • tests for splitting limits, and
  • simulative formability tests.

The Automotive Applications Committee (AAC) is a subcommittee of the Market Development Committee of AISI and focuses on advancing the use of steel in the highly competitive automotive market. With offices and staff located in Detroit, cooperation between the automobile and steel industries has been key to its success. This industry cooperation resulted in the formation of the Auto/Steel Partnership, a consortium of DaimlerChrysler Corporation, Ford Motor Company and General Motors Corporation and the member companies of the AAC.
