AISI to Train Students on Installation, Maintenance of Steel Utility Poles for Storm Restoration Program

WASHINGTON, D.C., Oct. 28, 2009  – The Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI) will conduct a Steel Distribution Pole Lineman Training Workshop on November 17-19, 2009 at the Southeast Lineman Training Center (SLTC) in Trenton, Georgia.   The workshop will include classroom and hands-on demonstrations that cover the basics of handling, drilling, installing and climbing steel distribution poles. Veteran lineman and safety consultant Gary McDonald will conduct the training. McDonald has trained approximately 1,300 student linemen and faculty members at 25 community colleges and technical schools across the United States.

“This workshop is unique because we’ll be working in conjunction with SLTC’s storm restoration program, which provides best practices for the efficient restoration of power after a storm event. Steel poles provide a cost-effective solution to restoring power because they are durable in high-wind events and are easy to install and maintain. This workshop is part of our objective to train utility pole linemen and their instructors, as well as electric utility company senior executives, on the benefits of using steel utility distribution poles, “said Dan Snyder, manager of SMDI’s utility pole program.

The training workshop will begin at 10 a.m. on both November 17 and 18. On November 19, a storm restoration session will be held in the evening. For more information or to register, contact Dan Snyder at For more information or to schedule an SMDI Lineman Workshop, visit

SMDI launched its Lineman Training Workshop program in 2005. To date, approximately 1,300 student linemen and faculty members at 25 community colleges and technical schools across the United States have participated in the workshops.
