Delbert F. Boring, P.E. Recognized With Outstanding Civil Engineering Alumni Award

WASHINGTON, D.C. Sept. 23, 2009 – The Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI) congratulates Delbert F. Boring, P.E., for his selection as the 2009 recipient of the Outstanding Civil Engineering Alumni Award presented by The Ohio State University (OSU) Civil Engineering Alumni Association. This is the most esteemed award presented by OSU’s Civil Engineering Alumni Association. Del Boring served as vice president of construction market development at the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) until his retirement in December 2007.

Boring was selected for the Outstanding Civil Engineering Alumni Award for his contributions to the civil engineering profession. The following criteria were established for selection of award recipients by OSU’s Alumni Board of Governors:

  • Advancement of knowledge in the field of civil engineering.
  • Exercise of civil engineering expertise for the benefit of the general public.
  • Demonstrated excellence in the teaching of civil engineering.
  • Achievements in the practice of civil engineering which contribute to the recognition of the civil engineering profession.
Boring is a 1971 graduate of The Ohio State University (B.S.C.E.) and received a master’s degree in structural engineering from OSU in 1979.

Jeanes, P.E., president of the Steel Market Development Institute, said. “He has received many awards and recognition from the North American steel industry as a result of his leadership and commitment to advancing the use of steel in the construction market. We know that it is a special privilege for Del to be recognized by his peers at The Ohio State University Civil Engineering Alumni Association.”

Del Boring retired from AISI after 31 years of service. He joined AISI in 1976 as regional director of construction codes and standards. Subsequently, he was promoted to director of construction codes and standards. In 2003, he was promoted to vice president of construction market development, where he was responsible for developing and implementing the Market Development Strategic Plan for AISI’s Construction Market program. He is a recognized authority on structural fire endurance and co-authored the book Fire Protection Through Modern Building Codes, published by AISI in 1981. 

In 2008, Boring received the Larry A. Swaney Award from the Metal Construction Association for his service to the metal construction industry. He was recognized with the prestigious ANSI (American National Standards Institute) Meritorious Service Award in 2000 for his significant contributions to the voluntary consensus standards system. He received the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) Award of Merit in 1990 and the ASTM Committee E-5 Award of Recognition in 1986 and 1989.Prior to joining AISI, his career included positions with the Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corporation; the Ohio Department of Industrial Relations, Board of Building Standards; and The Ohio State University, Building Research Laboratory, where he co-authored four research publications on fire protection.
