Former U.S. Trade Representative Robert Portman to Address American Iron and Steel Institute's 2009 General Meeting May 5

WASHINGTON, D.C., March 9, 2009 – Robert Portman, former U.S. Congressman, U.S. trade representative and director of Office of Management and Budget under President George W. Bush, will deliver remarks on “Economic Policy and Politics at a Time of Crisis” at the American Iron and Steel Institute's (AISI) 117th General Meeting, which will be held May 3-5 in Phoenix, Ariz.  Portman will give the closing remarks on May 5 at a joint general session of AISI and the Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI)—the sixth year the groups are holding their Annual Meetings together.

At a time of significant economic crisis, Ambassador Portman will provide his insights on how companies and industries need to adapt to the ever changing global marketplace. He will talk about the recently passed economic stimulus package, President Obama’s new spending plans and how the new Congress’ policies could impact industries competing internationally.

With the AISI annual meeting’s theme Global Challenges – Global Solutions, this premier meeting of steel producers, suppliers and service centers provides a forum for the industry to discuss issues affecting the competitiveness of North American manufacturing.   Private industry, think tank, government and non-government organization experts will discuss topics ranging from long-range trends in demographics and a framework for the future, to rebuilding America’s transportation and infrastructure; analysis on the first 100 days of the new Congress and Administration; the business of climate change and energy; and what market trends will be important to steel in the next 12 to 24 months.
