Steel Industry Leaders Discuss Future Challenges and Opportunities in the Global Steel Sector

Jobs, climate change and infrastructure are top priorities

Washington, D.C. – More than three hundred leaders of the North American steel industry are expected to meet in Boca Raton, Fla. for the 118th General Meeting of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) to discuss the state of the global steel sector, market outlooks and challenges and opportunities that will shape the industry’s future.    AISI’s meeting is being held jointly with the Metal Service Center Institute (MSCI), which represents most elements of the metals value chain, including metals producers, distributors, and processors.

Daniel R. DiMicco, chairman, president and CEO of Nucor Corporation, headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, assumes the chairmanship of AISI, the leading trade association representing North American steel producers, during a year where steel capacity utilization has more than doubled since the lowest point during the global recession.   He succeeds James L. Wainscott, chairman, president and CEO of AK Steel Corporation, West Chester, Ohio.

AISI’s General Meeting is also featuring a variety of speakers who will look at challenges such as the current economic outlook, the upcoming midterm elections and strategies the industry is exploring to lighten its environmental footprint.   Former Undersecretary of State and Ambassador Nicholas Burns will discuss how global international affairs and American businesses should work together for the
economic recovery, while protecting our economic interests abroad.  Charlie E. Cook, Jr., editor and publisher of The Cook Political Report, will provide commentary on Congress’ agenda as well as the upcoming November elections.  Another keynote speaker, Dr. Mark Zandi, chief economist and cofounder of Moody’s, will examine his findings of the 2009 “stimulus” package and its impact on the economy.  In addition, a number of industry awards will also be presented, including the prestigious Gary Medal, presented annually to recognize an individual for his or her remarkable lifelong contributions to the North American steel industry.

During the annual meeting, AISI will be hosting a press conference on Monday, May 3rd at 11:00 AM.  Those who cannot join us in Florida, may participate by audio.  The following list of steel executives will speak:
