As producer of the world’s most recycled material, the steel industry plays a vital role in recycling

Washington, D.C. – American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) President and CEO Thomas J. Gibson commended Members of the U.S. Senate for passing a resolution that highlights the environmental benefits of recycling while supporting improvement in the collection, processing and use of recyclable materials throughout the United States.

“We greatly appreciate the U.S. Senate unanimously passing Senate Resolution 251 expressing support for recycling,” Gibson said.  “This is clearly a significant part of our national endeavor that everyone can agree upon.  The benefits of recycling range from the conservation of valuable natural resources and energy to the preservation and growth of steady, well-paying jobs, even in a down economy.  The steel industry has a vital role in recycling, with steel literally being the most recycled material in the U.S., as well as globally.  The extensive system of scrap processors and consuming steel mills throughout our nation provide a highly responsible end of life disposition for the steel in automobiles, containers, and construction materials.  As old steel products become new steel products through recycling, the needs of people are fulfilled and we reduce impact on the planet.”

Recycling not only safeguards natural resources and reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills, but also saves energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.  Steel is the engine that drives the recycling of many consumer goods as seen by the over 100 percent recycling rate of automobiles, the 90 percent recycling rate of appliances and the more than 66 percent recycling rate of steel packaging.
