Forum: It's Time to Create Good-Paying Jobs in America

The Peoria (Illinois) Journal Star
Letter to the Editor

As President Obama visits Illinois - an important manufacturing state - to talk about the state of the economy, I'd like to recommend immediate steps to help jumpstart the economy and put people back to work.

Investing in modernizing our crumbling infrastructure would create high-value jobs while fixing costly transportation gridlock. It would also heighten America's competitiveness. So would expanding access to America's domestic and natural gas resources, which would decrease our dependence on foreign oil while creating hundreds of thousands of new jobs.

To support this job creation, we must put a stop to overreaching regulations that are choking growth. The rising volume of new and changing regulations creates uncertainty and discourages investment leading to economic growth. Finally, we must vigorously enforce our trade laws to prevent violators from stealing market share from U.S. manufacturers and good-paying jobs from American workers.

The time to act is now.
