Washington, D.C. –The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) released its Industry Profile for 2012 today on Capitol Hill during a Congressional Steel Caucus Hearing.  The Profile provides an overview of the American steel industry highlighting its commitment to sustainability, its global leadership in labor productivity, and demonstrating its ubiquitous presence throughout America in the automotive, construction and container markets, and as a strategic material in military applications.  In addition, the Profile provides a list of AISI’s Producer Members including their locations and products produced.
“We hope this 2012 industry profile will help everyone, from policymakers to the general public, better understand the importance of the American steel industry to our economy and our quality of life,” said Thomas J. Gibson, president and CEO, AISI.  “Steel is the most prevalent material in the U.S. economy supporting more than one million U.S. jobs.  It is also the most recycled material, more than all other materials combined.  This Profile showcases the significance of steel in maintaining our global competiveness, transportation infrastructure, sustainability, energy and national security.”

AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice.  AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology.  AISI is comprised of 25 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and 124 associate and affiliate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry.  AISI's member companies represent over three quarters of both U.S. and North American steel capacity.  For more news about steel and its applications, view AISI’s Web site at
