FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CHICAGO, March 14, 2019 – Dr. Jody N. Hall, vice president, automotive market for the Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI), a business unit of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), shared some unique automotive industry insight and perspective in her keynote address at The S&P Global Platts 15th Annual Steel Markets North America Conference, which took place March 14 to 15 at the W Chicago-City Center.

Hall’s presentation, “How the Architecture of Future Mobility will be Strengthened by Steel,” focused on how advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) will continue to support vehicle safety, design flexibility, fuel efficiency or increased battery range, strength, durability, environmental performance and value for vehicles of the future.

“The steel industry has a long history of successfully partnering with global automakers to develop highly optimized, cost effective and mass efficient solutions for current and future vehicles,” said Hall. “While the auto industry is making significant investments in enabling technologies for mobility, autonomy, electric vehicles and more, it’s critical to have a strong, durable and cost-effective material that offers vehicle designers as many options as possible. Advanced high-strength steel has consistently filled those needs for the industry, and will continue to do so in the future.”

The S&P Global Platts 15th Annual Steel Markets North America Conference featured discussions on current and future trends in the steel market and examined evolutions in manufacturing, supply/demand, policy, international influence and more. This annual event attracts attendees from the entire steel market including producers, traders, buyers and investors from more than 100 organizations.

AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice. AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology. AISI is comprised of 21 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and approximately 120 associate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry.

The Steel Market Development Institute, a business unit of AISI, increases and defends the use of steel by developing innovative materials, applications and value-added solutions for customers in the automotive, construction and packaging markets. SMDI automotive investors include: AK Steel Corporation, Algoma, ArcelorMittal and Nucor Corporation. For more information on SMDI auto, visit www.autosteel.org or follow @SMDISteel on Twitter.
