Steel Bumpers Overview

Steel BumpersThe Bumper Project is managed by a membership consisting of North American steel producers, bumper manufacturers, and representatives of the OEMs. The Project addresses technological challenges, such as the development of a system that is capable of absorbing energy, and the development of lightweight steel facebar systems for light truck vehicles.

The importance of bumper design has grown significantly in recent years due to increased safety standards, the need to decrease vehicle weight, and the introduction of new high-strength and ultra high-strength steels. In addition, the work of the Project Team has grown in importance due to the increased interest in alternative materials such as aluminum and composites.
