Long Products Market Overview

In the North American steel industry, SMDI members are leaders and innovators. The companies that invest in our programs are using that investment as a catalyst for change to advance steel's competitive edge.  From powertrains, chassis and suspension systems to continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP), reinforced concrete railroad ties, and wire rod and fastener technology, SMDI's Long Products Market Development Group (LPMDG) is making steel the material of choice for ground vehicle, construction and other broad-based markets.

The Long Products Market Development Group, formed in 1997, provides a unique forum for long products steel producers.  Through the support of SMDI, the LPMDG is growing the market for value-added steel bar and rod products. With member companies and task forces--Automotive/Heavy Equipment and Construction/Infrastructure--the group is committed to developing innovative solutions to the challenges facing their clients and the steel industry.

Through research and development of new product and process technologies, the LPMDG works in partnership with customer groups to develop pre-competitive solutions to meet market challenges. Technology Transfer seminars enhance the technological processes and material innovations occurring in the industry. In tandem with SMDI's ability to leverage the accomplishments and engineering contacts of our automotive and construction programs, members are able to access a valuable resource base.
